Essential Equipment for Caving

Caving, or the sport of cave exploration, is an activity that can be enjoyed in caves located all around the United States.  However, it’s also important to protect yourself and take the necessary safety precautions because caving can be dangerous.  First, it’s important to never enter a location that is unexplored; this is a recipe for disaster unless you’re a certified caver.  It’s also important to take the proper equipment, including first aid kit, waterproof flashlights (two to three per person are recommended), and boots and clothing that will protect you from cold and potential abrasions.

Though we refer to caving as cave exploration, unless you’re a certified expert, you will essentially be exploring areas that other adventurers have before.  However, this is quite an enjoyable activity, and provided safety is emphasized, a lot like hiking in the dark.  Just as any trek into the wilderness, it’s important to tell someone where you’re going, how long you will be gone, and when you intend to return (even if it’s just a few minutes).
