Importance of Having a Compass
Though the standard N, S, E, W compass is often replaced with a GPS device, it’s still important to carry one of these seemingly archaic tools while traveling outdoors. The fact is a GPS device can be unreliable. It can run out of power, and is more easily damaged by external forces like water, blunt trauma, or heat. The compass has been used for centuries to navigate because it is consistent, and also quite resilient to damage.
Many people think because they own a GPS device they don’t need a compass, but this simply isn’t true in the outdoors. It’s important to be prepared whenever you’re outdoors, and should your GPS device stop working, you’ll be glad you have a compass. It’s also a good idea to bring a map, and even invest in a map compass. Though these items might have been replaced by technology, they’re still essential because technology is not one hundred percent reliable.
