Taking the Nighttime Plunge

Very few scuba divers have unlimited time on their hands. Day jobs and family commitments can postpone their dates with the ocean depths. Sometimes it’s most convenient to squeeze in a night dive. A dive light provides the illumination divers need to stay safe and enjoy the sights.
Dive lights vary slightly in style. Most divers are satisfied with flashlights, which operate on battery power just like the ones found in a typical home. The only difference is in their waterproof casing. Divers who want to explore wreckage or underwater caverns should try canister lights, which are traditionally brighter and use a power source that’s strapped to the diver’s waist. Safety is crucial on a night dive, so take every precaution to prior to your next underwater expedition.
Cave Diving Safety
Cave diving is one of the most enjoyable diving activities, but it can also be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken. Cave diving, like scuba diving, requires training and certification. Most, if not all cave diving accidents and deaths have been caused by the diver being untrained or uncertified. Standard equipment for cave diving includes multiple dive lights, rope and tethers, and scuba equipment. Cave diving requires knowledge of the procedures that make dives in underwater caves or sumps safe, and just like scuba diving, there are various levels of certification. There are several nationally recognized societies spanning multiple countries that work to emphasize cave diving safety.
The responsibilities of these cave diving societies include putting up signs that warn divers of difficult dives or unsafe locations, and also increasing public awareness of cave diving. Despite the dangers, given the proper precautions cave diving is quite the surreal experience that can lead to a lifelong passion of water and exploration.
