So you’ve decided to go fishing, but what do you do with a fish once you’ve caught it?  Eat it of course!  It’s good to practice catch and release if you’re just fishing for sport, but everyone should have a chance to eat a fish fillet at least once.  Here’s how to filet a fish in just a few easy steps.  It’s not necessary, but a set of fillet knives makes this go much quicker!

Step 1.) Lay the fish on a flat surface, and cut off its head and tail (this step assumes you have removed your catch from the line and are ready to cook it).

Step 2.) On the bottom of the fish’s body, make a vertical incision that stretches from head to tail (the cut doesn’t have to go all the way through).

Step 3.) Pull the two halves of the fish apart, and remove the skeleton.

Step 4.) Remove the scales from the two pieces of meat with your fillet knife.

Step 5.) Now you should have two pristine fish fillets, whether you cook them on the grill, in a saucepan, or on a spit over the fire is up to you!
