When it comes navigating on the water, there are a lot of fancy instruments out there that can assist you.  But in the end, nothing compares to the reliability of an old fashioned marine compass.  Before there were compasses, sailors used the stars to navigate, but once the compass was invented, it was used for centuries paired with sea charts.  Most boat owners carry GPS units nowadays, but should technology fail for whatever reason, a marine compass offers unrivaled reliability.

Though most of the time we tend to be in view of land, if you’re not or adverse weather conditions prevent you from viewing it, a compass can get you back safely.  It’s important to check your coordinates and have a rough idea as to your location at all times, that way, you can find your way back to land just by knowing which direction is north.
